Here are two things to consider when talking about using cords and cables/chains that are longer than 20’.

  • When ordering such lengths please have an understanding that such a long suspension of a relatively lightweight 4’+long object would have a tendency to sway, even in slight air movement. Too often, we have had to fix these types of misapplications.
  • When cables are used, cords are often used too. The weight of a suspended 30’ cord, coupled with some slight movement, could cause a straight-blade plug to disengage from a power receptacle. For cords without plugs, we would need to verify that a cord relief fitting at the j-box above would be sufficient to support the weight of the 30’ cord. The electrical contractor would need to use the correct fitting at the j-box.
