Indoor Positioning - How does Acuity's IPS work?

Acuity Brands uses two different technologies for its indoor positioning systems. The first is used for positioning a mobile device. Using Visible Light Communication (VLC) to modulate the light frequency emitted by the LED luminaire in a way that the human eye cannot detect, the camera on most mobile devices decodes this light to determine the precise location of the mobile device. This is a one-way communication from the luminaire to a mobile device and is similar to optical telegraphy.

The second technology used by Acuity Brands is Bluetooth® beacons which allow a mobile device to locate its own position based on which beacon it detects.

Acuity’s Indoor Positioning System can use one or both types of technology depending on the use case to deliver accuracy of up to 4”.
